The Team at Bongo LLP funded by the Teenage Cancer Trust developed and produced this free, exciting and innovative education resource for use in schools covering two primary objectives:

The first primary objective was to get young people and their families talking about issues of the cancer, this is reflected in the title of the materials namely “Let’s talk about it”.

The second primary objective was to provide schools with a method by which they can raise funds to support teenage cancer patients in their local community.

Cancer provides an ideal opportunity to explore two contrasting concepts:

(a) The first of these being the technical and scientific side to the disease.

(b) In contrast to these, the emotions and feelings that the topic generates provide an ideal opportunity to explore creative writing and creative expression.

The education materials expand on the idea behind the phrase:
“let’s talk about it”

The materials consist of a number of lessons each approximately 50 minutes in duration. The lessons are driven by a series of online activities and will culminate in an extended activity.

The materials cover a number of key areas:

1. Creative and formal writing.
2. The exploration of the facts about teenage cancer.
3. The prevention of cancer.
4. The identification of early signs of cancer.

These materials modify the social image of cancer. Some things stand out. Firstly, the “Journey of Discovery”, which is built into the resources. This does not stop with finding you have cancer but continues to what has been described as a change in the whole world of both the individual and those who surround them. All this relates back to fear and a lack of communication.

The resource encourages communication in the form of discussions between pupils, friends, teachers and parents. This is achieved by providing stimulus activities that encourage debate and research. The materials are ideally suited to both an English lesson and a PSHE lesson. They deal with fear, pain and optimism.

The film follows the story of a young cancer patient. This film is used to anchor the learning activities. Designed for White Board and individual computer use the resource sets new standards in interactive earning combining the use of film and interaction from the user.
